Shared Bike Scheme Launches in Navan

From today you’ll be able to get around Navan even more easily, with a Tier shared bike. Fifty bikes are available all around Navan – including 25 e-Bikes. And coming soon: electric cargo bikes!

Navan is the latest location to have a shared bike scheme by international mobility provider Tier – joining Limerick, DCU and Fingal which were launched earlier this year.

Navan Cycling Initiative were formally invited to the launch, where we got a chance to speak with Mayor of Navan Eddie Fennessy, the country manager for Tier, and with the folks at Meath County Council who made this project happen.

What’s It All About?

Meath County Council have commissioned Tier, an international provider of mobility solutions, to provide a shared bike service in Navan. Using the bikes is easy:

Return

1. Register

Install and register using the Tier mobile app.

2. Ride

Use the app to locate and unlock a bike – choose from a normal pedal bike, an e-Bike or if you’re doing the weekly shop, an e-Cargo bike (coming soon).

3. Return

Park or lock your bike inside the area shown below.

Bike stations – free
Blue zone – free
Pink zone – €1 to park here
Outside these areas – €20

The app shows you where you are and what the parking rate is. Wherever you park, be mindful of others – don’t leave the bike somewhere that blocks the path.

Where Can I Ride?

The map below shows where you can use the bikes initially. It’s expected that this area will evolve, as people use the service more and more.

What Bikes are Available?

At launch there are two options: a normal pedal bike, or an e-bike.

The difference with an e-Bike is that every time you pedal, the motor assists you. This is great for beginners, or for those steep hills (yes, we tested it on Church Hill, and it was fantastic).

Coming soon are the e-Cargo Bikes. These are seriously sophisticated equipment, and the Tier team are finalising where these will be located.

What Does it Cost?

Tier charges you every 30 minutes while you’re using the bike – which is enough to get you from one end of Navan to the other without breaking a sweat.
