Navan 2021 – Open for Business!
RTE in town as outdoor hospitality returns to the streets of Navan
Navan town centre was looking pristine in the sunshine as we welcomed RTÉ and prepared for outdoor dining to restart this week. There was a great buzz around the town as the camera crews reported from Watergate Street, Market Square and Trimgate Street, and laid out the plans for an outdoor summer.
Earlier this year, Navan Cycling Initiative worked on some plans for Navan 2021, ‘a place to go, and a way to get there’, and proposed some improvements to help Navan become a place to go to, rather than through. A key part of this was to provide public seating in public spaces around the town centre to enable people to sit and socialise outdoors safely and to support local businesses.
Thanks to the efforts and hard work of a number of people including Councillor Yemi Adenuga, Paula McCaul of County Meath Chamber, Paul O’Brien of Meath County Council, NCI, and of course the many local business owners around the town themselves, we now have some beautiful parklets to enjoy. And this is only the beginning. So be sure to visit Navan this summer and enjoy all it has to offer!

Navan 2021 Part II – A Way to Get There
As part of the plans for Navan 2021, we focussed on accelerating the creation of protected walking/cycling routes that will have the biggest positive impact in the shortest time, to allow everyone to get around safely and easily. The first route connects Blackwater park to the existing cycle lanes at the N51, beside St Paul’s school. This will provide a safe, spacious route for walking and cycling to the park, which will reduce the pressure on the overcrowded car park. The second route is along the Dublin road, connecting the town with the Johnstown area, which will provide space for cyclists, walkers and runners alongside the Boyne.
These routes are already planned, so the idea is to accelerate the delivery, as was achieved in Blackrock village, to ensure that we get the benefit when we need it most. Stay tuned for news on these accelerated cycle lanes over the coming weeks.
