Dutch-style roundabout plan for Navan
Plans for a new large-sale residential development in Navan includes top-class cycling infrastructure
While progress on delivering cycling infrastructure to Navan has been slow, what we have seen is lots of plans and proposals for numerous schemes and routes. Yet perhaps none match the ambitions of these new plans, which include a Dutch-style roundabout. This is being proposed as part of the new large-sale residential development beside the Trim Road, including a new distributor road (known as LDR1A), which has been submitted to An Bord Pleanála.
A Dutch-style roundabout is as good as it gets in terms of active travel infrastructure and safety for all road users, and, if approved, this would be only the second one in Ireland (the other is already built in Dublin 15). It may be some time off, and yet to be approved, but these proposed drawings look amazing. It will feature an orbital cycle track which prioritises pedestrians and cyclists on all arms and maintains segregation for all modes.
The development, by Cairn Homes, proposes the construction of a new distributor road connecting the Trim Road (R161) to the Dublin Road (R147), including a bridge over the Navan-Dublin Railway line, and ancillary development and works. The application is being submitted as a Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) application on the basis that the site boundary overlaps with the application boundary of a previously permitted Strategic Housing Development (An Bord Pleanála Ref. 311199-21).
It will also include a new road to Swanbrook Estate, a pedestrian link from the LDR1(a) to Limekiln Hall, a bridge over the Navan Railway Line (at the back of the Beaufort greenway near Beaufort College), and public lighting and landscaping.
